Primary Objective: Exploration and development of tectonic theory as a critical and methodological means to improve the experienced spatial quality of the built environment through an addressing of the multiple technological and environmental challenges that govern architectural practice from furnishing details to the vastness of urban space. Specific thematic interests: Tectonic relations across scales, cultures, and technologies and as a linkage between architectural heritage and critical shaping of the future architectural field, with a particular interest in the furniture scale and everyday architecture. The research juxtaposes critical theory- and design method development and practical experiments often in collaboration with the building industry.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

The objective is to continue to explore, identify and develop architectural theory, and architectural design methods and models for ‘Environmental Tectonics’, based on the relations between environmental architecture (focused on thermal and acoustic fields), tectonics in architecture (focused on material composites/compositions, transformation, appearance) and computational architecture (focused on generative, responsive, robotic and simulation models). The research operates across scales from molecular material structures to thermal flow conditions surrounding buildings. The research is conducted by theoretical studies, case studies and experimental studies based on computational and physical full size probes.

Primary objective: To study how architectural design ’solutions’ and design ‘problem’ processes can be investigated in co-evolution through developing adaptive robotic fabrication processes that interactively respond to human and material behaviour. Specific thematic interests: Data-driven and performance-based architecture with a specific focus on the potential of adaptive robotics and how these can influence creative cognitive design processes. This is being explored through development of both computational design algorithms and physical demonstrators.

Primary Objective: Investigate whether tectonic theory is applicable to describe, identify, and position an integrated building culture that takes into consideration architectural, urban design, and engineering concerns in comprehending and practicing design of urban space. Specific thematic interests: Extend and develop tectonic theories to qualify a joining of architecture, urban design, and engineering in addressing the multiple environmental, social, and cultural challenges facing the build environment, with a particular focus on how the urban surface can figure in a critical relation with the architectural volume.
